Welcome to our SEND pages, providing information on the support we provide for students who have Special Educational Needs or Disabilities. We hope you will enjoy reading about the variety of ways in which Skegness Academy is able to support students with additional needs to reach their full potential.

Our SEND Offer

Our Special Educational Needs and Disability Coordinator is Lorna Coates-Metheringham. 

At Skegness Academy we believe that every child matters and during their journey with us, we will ensure that they are happy, safe and enjoy their learning. If at any time problems arise, they will be dealt with promptly and in partnership with students and their parents/carers.

We are committed to ensuring that all students make good progress. This may involve providing additional small group support before and after school plus additional help within the school day, individually or in a small group, focusing on individual needs.

We offer a warm, nurturing learning environment to all our students and our team of staff are dedicated to supporting vulnerable students. In order to ensure effective person-centred support, all our SEND students have an identified key person who is the main link for their family at the school. We are proactive in ensuring that all students attend school and that any barriers to attendance are effectively overcome.

At Skegness Academy we work with students with a range of SEND and endeavour to ensure that teaching and learning, the curriculum, and achievement meets the needs of all students and prepares them for life beyond Skegness Academy.

The Skegness Academy values the abilities and achievements of all its pupils, and is committed to providing each pupil with the best possible environment for learning. We recognise that many pupils will have special needs at some time during their school life. Whilst many factors contribute to the range of difficulties experienced by some children, we believe that much can be done to overcome them by parents, teachers, support staff and pupils working together.

In the first instance, the Skegness Academy will work with the pupil, their family and the Local Authority to establish if we can meet their needs.

Objectives of the Skegness Academy SEND Provision are as follows:-

  • To ensure all pupils have access to a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum
  • To provide a differentiated curriculum appropriate to the individual's needs and ability
  • To ensure the identification of all pupils requiring SEND provision as early as possible
  • To ensure that SEND pupils take as full a part as possible in all school activities
  • To liaise with outside agencies, when this would be beneficial in order to access further specialist support for pupils and parents

The main methods of provision made by the school are extremely flexible and are tailored to the needs of the pupils as much as possible. Staff are experienced in working with all areas of SEND and are highly committed to making children's lives not only productive but happy. Examples of SEND provision include:

  • Quality first teaching in class supported by a differentiated curriculum
  • Additional intervention work with support staff, either individually or in a small group
  • In-class support, with support assistance where appropriate
  • Support from specialists using specific programmes and training

The Skegness Academy firmly believes in developing a strong partnership with parents/carers and that this will enable children and young people with SEND to achieve their potential. The school recognises that parents/carers have a unique overview of their child's needs and how best to support them, and that this gives them a key role in the partnership. Parents/carers hold key information and have a critical role to play in their children's education.

We encourage parents to support their children at home, with their school work and in some cases we can provide intervention work to be completed at home with parental support.

All pupils at the Skegness Academy will have access to specialist careers advice. We also work closely with advisors from Lincolnshire County Council and will also refer your child to speak to an independent careers advisor if necessary.

The Team
The Skegness Academy has a large additional needs team consisting of Teaching Staff, Learning Mentors and Learning Support Assistants.

Our SEN team have expertise and have received training in the following areas:-

  • Supporting Pupils with Hearing Impairments
  • Moving and Handling
  • Personal Care

We use a number of aids to allow pupils to access our curriculum.

We support all the pupils on the SEN register using provisions from our Provision Map. We will monitor and update the plan for your child using the 'assess > plan > do > review' cycle.

Pupils will be involved in this process at all stages. We will produce a one-page profile with the pupil that will explain their needs and the best ways to support them.

The Skegness Academy monitors and assesses its pupils on a regular basis. We use the following methods of assessing any potential special educational needs:-

  • Staff Concerns / Referrals
  • GL Assessments
  • Regular baseline tests for pupils
  • Dyslexia and Dyscalculia screening where necessary
  • Specialist Teacher Assessments where necessary
  • Educational Psychologist Assessments
  • Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaires
  • Detailed Reading Comprehension Assessments (NGRT)
  • Specialist Teaching Team

The Academy responds to any SEND concerns by inviting you in to discuss your concerns fully. The Academy will decide if pupil needs extra support by assessing the nature of the concerns raised. The Academy will discuss this process with you during an initial meeting.

The Skegness Academy holds a formal parents' evening for each year group at least once a year and all parents are invited to attend. In addition to this we welcome parents of SEND pupils to review meetings.

We also work closely with the following agencies:

A Date with Dan: Keeping Children and Young People safe Online

Online safety can be a bit of a minefield and many of us have lots of questions on how we can not only keep our children safe but also let them enjoy the benefits the online world brings. After our live streamed event earlier this year, many parents and carers asked for the opportunity to ask us some questions. Join our resident Online Safety Officer, Dan Hawbrook, on the 25th November 2021 for a special Question and Answer session for parents and carers which will cover whatever YOU want to know – whether it's game ratings, parental controls, bullying or strangers – we will let you ask us those burning questions.

Parent Protect Resources

The Lucy Faithfull Foundation has produced some fantastic, bitesize, information clips and resources for parents around protecting children and young people from harmful sexual behaviour both online and offline. Child sexual abuse is a major public health problem affecting more than a million children under the age of 16 in the UK. All available evidence indicates that the risk to children has grown during the Covid-19 pandemic.
