At the Skegness Academy, the Art Department is made up of an enthusiastic and passionate group of specialist staff who are dedicated to delivering an inclusive art and design education.

Art runs across key stages three, four and five with the ambition that all students will develop knowledge and skills to become confident artists. We explore a range of artists, materials, techniques and processes, challenging students’ ideas of what art can include while helping them to become more observant and technically able.

At key stage three students will attend Art and Design for one hour per week, exploring artworks in both two and three dimensions while being assessed on how they respond to a theme. 

At key stage four we run BTEC Tech Award in Art and Design Practice, a vocational qualification that builds skills for the future. This course is ideal for anyone considering a design-based career or a vocation in the creative industries. Students will complete an internally assessed project during their first year of study based on a theme provided by the exam board. In the second year of study students will take part in a externally assessed practical examination which is provided and marked by the exam board.

Students can opt to return to studying Art during post-16 study at Skegness Academy. We have two different pathways to choose from. The first is the BTEC National Extended Certificate in Art and Design. This pathway will allow students to study art alongside other subjects and is ideal for learners who haven’t made firm decisions about their futures. Over the course of two years, students will research, investigate, develop ideas and produce outcomes based on a theme as well as undertake both practical and theoretical external assessments.

The second pathway is the BTEC National Diploma in Art and Design. This is classed as a double-weighted option and is equivalent to two A-Levels on conclusion. This course is ideal for students who know that they intend to move into a career within the creative industries. It includes a series of thematic projects in both two and three dimensions, teaching on how to design and build a portfolio of evidence as well as a range of practical and theoretical external assessments.

Studying art and design at any level is necessary and valuable to any learner. Art and Design encourages the development of creative and imaginative skills, transferable into any job or vocation. It also requires a great deal of patience, planning and commitment which are ideal skills for students to learn as the get older. We pride ourselves on supporting the development of literacy skills as well, as even with the practical nature of our subject, any career will require a competent level of reading, writing, speaking and listening.
